Caring for your weighted blanket in summer: What the label won't tell you.

The label on a weighted blanket gives you the safe minimum: follow the instructions and you won't damage the product. But minimum isn't optimum. Summer months — especially July and August — are the hardest season for any blanket. Night sweating is higher than in winter, body creams and sunscreens reach bedding more often, dust from open windows settles in more intensively. Treat the blanket strictly by the label and only by the label, and the product you bought in March starts looking and smelling noticeably worse after two years. That's not a product flaw. It's the normal consequence of use without a bit of extra knowledge.

What follows doesn't replace the manufacturer's instructions. It complements them — especially for what matters in summer.

Summer care for a weighted blanket – maintaining freshness and longevity

Why summer is a different season for blankets

Three factors act simultaneously:

  • Night sweating Even at 22°C bedroom temperature, you lose 300–500 ml of water through skin overnight. Most of it lands in bedding and the blanket cover. Salt from sweat damages cotton fibres over time.
  • Body cosmetics Sunscreens, moisturisers, after-sun oils — anything on your skin in the evening transfers to fabric. Some ingredients (mineral filters, oils) leave permanent marks if not washed out within 1–2 days.
  • Open windows More dust, pollen, urban soot. Dust mites grow faster in summer.

Net effect: a cover that needs washing every 2–3 weeks in winter deserves weekly washing in summer — that single intervention is what really extends blanket life.

Seven rules for summer care

  • 1. Wash the cover weekly, not biweekly In July and August the cover behaves like a sheet — daily skin contact + sweat + creams. Weekly washing at 40°C (for cotton percale) stops the yellowing process and kills 95% of dust mites.
  • 2. The blanket itself (inside) — wash 2–4 times a year, not more The label is right here: frequent washing of the inner blanket (with glass microbeads) shortens its life. Optimum: 2–4 times per year, plus whenever staining occurs. All other care should happen through the cover.
  • 3. Drying — never in the sun, never in a tumble dryer Glass microbeads dislike UV (shortens the inner cover's fabric life) and dryer agitation (damages the fill chambers, leads to uneven weight distribution). Optimum: laid flat in shade, in a ventilated room, on a drying rack with a wide grid, 24–48 hours.
  • 4. After washing the cover — shake and redistribute the fill chambers Even when you only wash the cover, putting the blanket in and out moves the microbeads within their chambers. Five minutes of shaking and gentle massaging restores even weight distribution. Skipping this step is the most common cause of "why has my blanket gone weird after a year."
  • 5. Summer cover — a second one, not the only one If you use the blanket year-round, rotate between two covers in summer. Laundry then dries calmly for 2 days, and you don't sleep without your blanket. It also doubles the interval between deep washings of each cover. Replacement covers in our accessories collection.
  • 6. Storing the heavier winter blanket — not in a vacuum bag If you switch a heavier blanket for a lighter one in summer, don't vacuum-pack the heavier one. Glass microbeads need space and air — tight compression deforms the chambers and the fill starts clumping. Optimum: cotton storage bag or a perforated cardboard box, in a dry place, away from heat.
  • 7. Test wash on your specific model before setting a routine Models differ: Comfort (waffle) behaves differently from Family Premium (satin); Single covers (cotton percale) again differently. First wash always one step below the label temperature — easier to add temperature next time than to fix damaged fibres. Full instructions in our care guide.

When replacing the cover beats buying a new blanket

Something manufacturers rarely say out loud: after 2–3 years of intensive use, the first element that loses appearance is the cover, not the blanket itself. The blanket (microbeads + inner chambers) with good care has a 5–8 year realistic lifespan. The cover — 2–4 years.

If your blanket still works perfectly but the cover looks tired — buying just a new cover is 3–4 times cheaper than a new set. Same applies if you have one set and want a second cover for summer rotation. Replacement covers in different fabrics in our accessories collection.

FAQ

How often should I check the microbeads inside the blanket?
No need to "check" visually. Every 2–3 months run your hand over the whole surface of the spread blanket. Feel any voids, bumps, clearly heavier spots? Shake and massage to restore evenness.
Can I use fabric softener for the cover?
We don't recommend. Softeners coat cotton fibres with a layer that reduces breathability over time. For summer thermoregulation that matters. A good cotton detergent at 40°C is enough.
What if the blanket gets wet (e.g. open window in rain)?
Lay flat in a ventilated room, use a fan at an angle (not directly). Drying 24–48 hours. No tumble dryer, no radiator — fast drying deforms the chambers.
