Easter and sleep: How not to ruin your circadian rhythm during the Holidays

Easter 2026 falls on Sunday 5 April – which for many of us means a long weekend, late family dinners, a glass of wine at the table and staying up well past midnight. Beautiful moments, but your circadian rhythm has a different opinion.

Why do holidays disrupt sleep?

Three main mechanisms destabilise sleep during festive periods. First, a shift in meal timing – a late, heavy Easter dinner raises body temperature and insulin levels precisely when your body should be cooling down for sleep. Second, alcohol – while it speeds up falling asleep, it drastically reduces REM sleep quality, which is critical for brain recovery. Third, prolonged social stimulation keeps cortisol elevated well into the night.

3 rules for sleeping well over Easter

  • Keep a fixed wake-up time – even if you went to bed late. Research from Harvard Medical School confirms this is the single most effective way to stabilise your circadian rhythm.
  • Limit alcohol – to 1–2 drinks and have your last one at least 3 hours before bed. Your body needs time to metabolise ethanol properly.
  • Post-lunch walk – take a 20-minute walk after the Easter meal instead of napping on the sofa. It aids digestion and lowers post-meal cortisol.

Holiday nap: yes or no?

A short nap (15–20 minutes maximum) around 1–2 PM is beneficial. A nap longer than 30 minutes enters deeper NREM sleep, which makes falling asleep in the evening much harder. Set an alarm – and stick to it.

Getting back on track after the holidays

If you fell off schedule for 2–3 days, your circadian rhythm will return to normal within 3–5 days with consistent sleep and wake times, morning sunlight exposure, and reduced blue light in the evenings.
