How to use a weighted blanket for the full effect.

A weighted blanket isn't a „magic” gadget that works on the first night for everyone. It's a tool that gives the most when you use it deliberately: with the right weight, a little patience and as part of a repeatable routine. The most common mistake is giving up after one night. Here's how to unlock its potential.

Start with the right weight

For an adult it's around 10% of body weight; for a child, less. A blanket that's too heavy doesn't work „better” – it can feel overwhelming rather than calming. Too light won't give clear pressure. If you're torn between two weights, the weight calculator makes it easy.

Give yourself time to adapt

The effect usually builds. Start with about fifteen minutes in the evening and extend gradually, up to all-night use after 1–2 weeks. The body needs a little time to get used to the pressure – which is why the „first night” is rarely a fair test.

  • Days 1–3: 15–20 minutes in the evening, on the sofa or in bed before sleep.
  • Days 4–7: extend to 30–60 minutes or the first part of the night.
  • Week 2: if it feels comfortable, stay under it all night.
The biggest mistake is judging the blanket after one night. Its effect is not a revelation but a habit.

How to use it for the best effect

  • Spread it evenly over the body. Pressure works best when it's distributed evenly and your feet don't stick out.
  • Build it into a fixed routine. The same time and steps teach the brain that rest is coming.
  • Match the cover to the season. Satin for warm nights, waffle cotton year-round.
  • Don't pair it with overly warm bedding. A cooler bedroom (17–19°C) strengthens the calming effect.

How it differs from a regular blanket and other types

A regular duvet warms you – its job is insulation. A weighted blanket adds weight rather than warmth: it works through deep pressure, not a layer of heat. What sets ours apart from cheaper pellet-filled models is glass microbeads (about 0.6 mm) – thinner, quieter and more hygienic. For a full comparison of blanket types, see How to choose a weighted blanket.

Lifespan: how long it lasts

Used well, a weighted blanket lasts for years. Glass microbeads don't clump like some cheaper fills, and the removable cover protects the core and is easy to refresh. We covered washing and storage separately in our care guide – one of the main factors that extends its life.
